One of a parents most important tasks is naming their baby

Naming your baby is one of the most important decisions you will make. It can be a lot of fun choosing a baby’s name but it can also be hard work. It is the responsibility of both parents and you must come to a choice that you both agree on and also that you think the child will be happy with as they grow older.

The choices of name are, of course, endless. Sometimes the simplest are the best but you can make slight variations to a simple name that will make it more attractive and make your child stand out from the crowd. But remember you don’t want them to stand out so much that they will be ridiculed.

You may want to choose a family name from you or your partner’s family and you can’t go far wrong with this. It tends to keep everyone happy and indeed it is traditional in some circles. But if you want something that strays away from this then you must be a bit more careful.

It is a good idea to find a baby’s names book and then make a list of the names that you both like. Use some common sense and don’t start making names up. Leave that to the celebrities. You can ask family and friends, see what they think. If you are really stuck they may be able to come up with some suggestions you haven’t thought of.

Remember though that it is your choice and a decision not to be rushed into. Take your time and don’t panic. If you are still having trouble, just relax and take some time out. It is amazing some of the places you can get an idea for a name from and you never know, it could just hit you one day when you least expect it.

One in ten parents regret child’s name

Filed under: Names — Alan @ 7:41 am

YourBabyDomainName.com is a website which allows parents to buy a web address in the name of their child. The website has conducted a survey that is found nearly 10% of parents later regret the name that they have chosen for their baby. Half of those who regret the name choice and said they chose the name because it was in fashion at the time.

The survey involved over 1200 parents and hoped to uncover the thought processes that parents went through when choosing a name for their child. The study by www.YourBabyDomainName.com also asked parents who regretted the first name the chose for their child why this was so. Other than it being fashionable, parents said they now regret the choice because they name they chose has become very popular, and they were hoping for a unique name for their child.

The respondents to the study were also asked how long it took them to choose their child/children’s name/s, to which two fifths, 41%, said that they had decided upon a name ‘before the child was born’; whilst 6% cited that it took them ‘over a week’ after the birth of their child to choose a first name.

In addition to this, one respondent taking part in the study claimed that it had taken them ‘over three months’ to choose a name for their child.

Wayne Bloore, Managing Director at YourBabyDomainName.com, said the following:

“This was extremely interesting research to conduct, as it allowed us to investigate the importance that a child’s name holds with parents.  It is a relief to see that the amount of parents that do feel regretful isn’t too large, although having said that, it is sad that there are some parents who feel that the names they gave to their children are now common and perhaps don’t hold such a special meaning.”

He continued,

“The aim of our website is to allow children to own their name online, not only to create a website dedicated to them for parents to share with friends and family; but for the child to use for whatever they wish when they grow up. We hope that this will allow parents and children to feel a sense of pride in their name; after all, the world is moving online and this website is a great modern take on the traditional baby-book.”

Sophia and Jayden top New York baby names

Filed under: Names — Alan @ 7:09 am

jsThe New York City Health Department has released their list of the most popular names in NYC in 2009 with Sophia and Jayden topping the list.

What is unique about the New York City list is that outside of the most popular girls and boys names, the city also broke the top names down by ethnicity which proved to be interesting as well.

Even more unique is the fact that the top boys name in the city is actually the top name for the subcategories of black and Hispanic boys’ names as well.

Sophia the made the top of both the white and Asian lists as well, but only took first place in the Asian category while it dropped to third place in the subcategory of white girls names topped by Olivia, Esther, and Sarah.  Madison topped the list of black girls’ names (6th overall) and Ashley (7th overall) topped the list of Hispanic names.

For boys the list remained largely unchanged from last year with Daniel (2nd overall) topping the list for white boys and Ryan (tied for 10th overall) topping the list for Asian boys.  Thus, it seems that while girls’ names got a bit more creative, parents stuck to their familiar favourites for the family namesakes.
