The word bib derives from old English meaning ‘drink’. This originally came from the Latin word for spillage. Research has recently suggested that most mothers start weaning their babies at four months old, something that is contrary to the advice issued by the agency. This begins the bonding process between mother and child before the baby is even born. As well as checking the baby’s developments, it is also possible for ultrasound to detect any potential problems with the placenta and cervix.

During an ultrasound examination a gel is put over the abdomen of the women and a special device is then rubbed across the belly which emits sound waves that bounce off the baby and then can be read by a machine.

Today 3-D ultrasound offers a more detailed picture of what is going on inside. Using this it is possible to see the baby’s facial expressions and it will give parents an idea of what their child is going to look like.

During pregnancy women will usually have two or three ultrasounds and if you are considering having one done in 3-D, it would probably be best to do this later in the pregnancy. Although you should do it before 30 weeks, because at this point the baby tends to be quite crowded in the womb.

The ideal time for taking a 3-D picture of the baby is from between 24 weeks and 28 weeks. A baby which is less than 24 weeks will probably not have particularly determinable facial features because they do not have much fat under the skin yet. The image that you get from a 3-D ultrasound scan is something that you will really be able to treasure and you will probably want to frame.

Anna highlights the demanding roles that a mother who has a disabled child has to fulfil on a daily basis and it shows that Thomas, despite his spina bifida and hydrocephalus, is indeed living a full life.

However, taking folic acid well before pregnancy begins can significantly reduce the chances of babies having spina bifida – many babies like Thomas would have been born without spina bifida and the additional challenges life will bring him if their mothers had been aware of the correct way to take folic acid (also known as vitamin B9).

With this is mind, despite being a ‘very proud Mum’, in the film Anna urges all women who could become pregnant to make sure they are taking folic acid correctly, and thus reduce their chances of having a baby with spina bifida an/or hydrocephalus.

“Although many women would make an association between folic acid and pregnancy, the majority are unaware that it needs to be present at conception, ideally being taken three months before a baby starts to develop,” explains Shine’s Chief Executive, Jackie Bland.

“The ‘I am a…’ film communicates this message clearly and effectively from a mother’s point of view and we hope it will be widely circulated and used by anyone concerned to prevent these disabilities occurring. By ensuring that folic acid is taken correctly by more women we really can save and change lives.”

Bubbles are one of the easiest ways to make bath time fun. Almost every baby loves bubbles and it’s a great way to make a reluctant bather giggle. Baby bathing games are a great way to make bath time an educational and fun activity. Even if your baby doesn’t enjoy bath games at first, it is worth being persistent as enjoying bath time a valuable step towards enjoying swimming, an activity that will keep your child safe in water.
